Business groups: UK entrepreneurs should be recognised with ‘micro-business day’

  • 11-10-2011

The Forum of Private Business (FPB), The Business Woman’s Network and Wanobe.com have joined forces to highlight the importance of firms with fewer than 10 employees to the UK’s economic recovery.

If introduced, the day is expected to celebrate the resilience of micro-businesses that have stayed afloat during the downturn. David Noble, managing director of Wanobe.com, believes the entrepreneurs behind such businesses should be treated as “heroes”. He said:

“A major problem facing the UK’s micro-businesses is how to chase money owed to them without upsetting a customer relationship.

“It is a dilemma micro-businesses must solve every day, and their creativity and perseverance in dealing with such issues is what makes them the real heroes in our marketplace.”

Maddy Harland, editor of Permaculture Magazine and co-founder of a successful international publishing company, runs her business with just eight employees. She welcomed proposals for a micro-business day, saying:

“Helping entrepreneurs and their dedicated brand of employees grow is a fundamental aspect to adapting our economy to the many challenges we face globally.

“We need to value and support micro-businesses. They play a significant role in providing employment and services nationally and are often the innovative testing ground of new ideas, technologies and practices that will constitute big business tomorrow.”

Jane Bennett, head of campaigns at the FPB, added: “The jobs that will drive economic growth are expected to be created in micro-businesses, so it is important that we place the political spotlight squarely on them and make sure it stays there.

“It is time for the government to stop talking micro and thinking macro and instead focus on the real issues of the smallest businesses.”
